CHAPTER SEVEN

A Formal Introduction to Raleigh Smyth (The Baddest Motherfuckin’ Son-of-a-Bitch in Town)

Hailey was chaperoned into Raleigh’s pad by Travis and Keith. They pinned her between them, looped their arms around hers, and escorted her like a prisoner. If she attempted to run, she wouldn’t have gotten far. Thought about what she’d do if she was given the upper hand crested over her frantic mind like surfers on waves.

How many holes would she put through these bastards if she had her gun with her?

The gun was a miniscule thing. She kept it in her purse and carried it with her everywhere. Her father had given it to her as a “going away” present. He’d given her a kiss on the cheek before saying:

“I hope you don’t need it but… ya never know.”

She needed it, all right. And it was sitting uselessly in her purse, which had probably been emptied out on the floor so Keith could have some extra beer money for the weekend.

Hailey Hearst had never been a violent person. Its why she went into medical care, because all she ever wanted was to see people get better when they were having a rough time. But this night had shattered her idealistic ways. Now, she wanted to know what it was like to put these men through the same torments she had undergone.

It won’t happen. She thought, in her mother’s voice. The bad guys always win in the end. That’s real life, sugar. It ain’t like in the movies.

Coming around a corner and into Raleigh’s chambers, Hailey was at least relieved that the apartment didn’t smell like the rest of the building did. It was about the only comfort she could find in these dire straits.

At least my rapist doesn’t smell bad.

Har-Har.

God. I wish I was dead.

Hailey gulped loudly. Keith nudged her with a sharp shoulder before saying: “You better do everything he says, you slut.”

Would she be able to?

What was her incentive?

It sounded like she was going to be abused no matter what she did.

Would he hurt her less if she was submissive?

No, because Wallace had said that Raleigh wanted a “screamer”. He wanted someone that would cry, and beg, and whine. Raleigh was looking for someone that wouldn’t like what he was doing, and he definitely wasn’t looking for someone who pretended to like it either.

Raleigh’s men had knocked down a wall so the gangster’s abode could be expanded. The walls were beige, but they were decorated with red-gel lighting and vibrant lava lamps. It looked like the corner of a disco club had been carved out and deposited in the top floor of the Decdale Place.

In one corner sat a squat minifridge. In the other, there was a potted plant. Hailey hoped that it was plastic, since there was no way the plant was receiving proper sunlight in this dark, damp den.

Hailey spotted a rotating, reflective ball dangling from the ceiling. It shimmered blood red in the weird light.

The floor was padded with plastic-wrap, and there were several long sofas pressed up against all three walls.
